Project Code: IDN-GER-SHW-P01

This project will support the running costs of a safe house for young women (including under-aged workers) coming out of trafficking situations. The project will support 13 women through a six-month rehabilitation program. This includes health checks, counselling, skills development and where possible reunification and restoration within families. An important part of the program is helping families to accept their daughter without judging or shaming her, and restoring the family unit. Another arm of the project is to strengthen community cohesiveness through peace-maker training programs reaching 100 participants, as well as business development and leadership training and mentoring for 75 participants.

What we like about it:

The program works holistically and intensively with young women to not only rescue them from prostitution and trafficking, but to provide them with healing and a new life. Our partners are local Indonesians who have seen the need and responded. They know the culture well and know how to work within families, an important part of Balinese culture. We appreciate that the program is tailored for each woman. If at the end of six months she is still requiring support, she can continue to stay at the safe house for another six months. We also like the way our partners work to address the wider community issues that lead to increased vulnerability in women, through their peace-making, leadership mentoring and social enterprise efforts.

Budget:  $25,300

The Need:

Bali is one of the more prosperous islands in Indonesia, but tourism has increased the vulnerability of the poor to trafficking. Demand for commercial sex workers is increasing, and unfortunately there is also an increase in the rise of child sex tourism. Official response to trafficking is currently very limited. While other NGOs work in this space, there is no other safe house in Bali where women can be restored, and provided with employment skills after leaving a life of prostitution.

Life Change:

  • Young women are restored out of prostitution, and given means of earning an income with dignity
  • Families are reunited and restored
  • The community is empowered financially through business training and group support
  • A growing movement that leads to a peace-loving generation that is caring and tolerant of others
