Overview:
This project builds on a previous 4-year project and will partially fund the running of an English medium school in the mountainous region of Terhi Garwhal, northern India, where extreme inequality and marginalisation makes children vulnerable to child labour in order to feed their families. The school has approximately 100 children attending classes from preschool through to 8th grade and services fifteen villages in a remote location. Our partner also reaches out to children who are unable to attend school due to long travel distances and provides evening classes taught by volunteers.
Why support this:
The quality of education is much higher than that available anywhere else in the region, and plays a key role in holistically developing rural areas and preventing migration away from the regions. The children are also provided with character development lessons, producing outstanding, well educated citizens able to make an impact in their families, neighbourhoods and broader communities. The school focuses on working with parents and grand-parents to make sure they understand the value of education. Finally, the children are also provided with health education they can carry back to their families.
Budget: $50,000 total budget for three years. Year 1 budget $18,000.
The Need:
Education in India is in crisis. Particularly in remote areas, government teachers simply do not turn up to class, and students are passed through grades without being able to read or write. Children in remote communities are not getting an education which traps them in intergenerational poverty. Health is also poor, often due to lack of knowledge.
