Overview:
Working in a remote and developing part of Indonesia, our partners employ over 100 national staff to run a medical clinic, hospital, a small farm for agricultural training and food security and foster homes for abandoned children. The Hohidiai projects are headed up by an Australian couple who have been residents in the area for more than 20 years. Hohidiai currently runs an R-9 (foundation to middle) international curriculum school. This project will fund a new early learning centre building, equipment and education resources and will employ an educator and helper for the first year. The facilities will include a kitchen, table area for dining and craft activities, nap room, toilets and nappy change space, and indoor and outdoor play areas.
What we like about it:
Our partners have been working in this region for many years. They have provided much-needed medical care, education and community development after a horrific conflict in the region saw 10,000 people killed. We like the fact that our partners are working to train up local staff to ensure the community is empowered. The work is holistic, looking at the needs of the community and developing projects which will address these needs.

The Need:
In this remote community, healthcare and education facilities are still developing. Hohidiai focuses on marginalised members of society such as vulnerable children and those suffering from diseases that make life in their communities difficult. While children from the age of four can now attend the school, parents of younger children have no access to quality childcare and so many preschoolers are left to play by themselves near their mothers or carers while they work.
