Overview:
This is a follow-on project after an initial Entrust-supported project provided seed funding to allow a disabled person’s group in rural Swaziland to set up a chicken broiler business to earn their own income. Results are strong and improving as the group learns through trial and error and receives training and advice from our local partners and government authorities. This project supports a new purpose-built chicken-rearing building and two batches of 300 chicks, which will double current capacity.
What we like about it:
There are no disability services or support nets in this part of Swaziland and the disabled are often invisible and without a means to earn an income. This group is determined to succeed. They have successfully completed the implementation of a chicken-rearing project, having learned an enormous amount and are now ready for the next stage. This is a committed group, determined not to be defined by their disabilities and this project will help the group to become self-sufficient. With a market ready to buy, this project has great potential.
Budget: $20,680 for a one-year project. The budget covers the cost of the new building on land that has been donated for this purpose, 600 chicks including vet costs, food, and related equipment.
The Need:
Due to severe poverty, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, poor education, low employment and a lack of services, this rural part of ESwatini has many disabled people who are extremely disadvantaged. With no welfare system the disabled are often shunned and expected to sit at home and be taken care of by their families – who are themselves under a lot of pressure just to survive.
